On December 9th, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a subsidiary of Indonesian National Oil Company (Pertamina) responsible for geothermal energy development, successfully passed strict performance testing by the owner and general contractor for the 500kW geothermal tailwater power generation project developed by the owner, and the project passed acceptance. Kaishan provides modular power generation equipment for geothermal power stations for this project.

In July 2021, PGE conducted an EPC bidding for a 500kW geothermal tailwater small-scale power plant experimental project at its Lahendong geothermal power plant. Kaishan, as the only power plant equipment supplier, provided generator sets to Yokogawa (Indonesia), the winning general contractor. At the beginning of this year, the power station was completed and connected to the grid. Unfortunately, a motor burning accident occurred during a 72 hour operation test. Kaishan requested that the generator manufacturer (Japanese company) provide a replacement motor. Recently, the PGE experimental project has been successfully accepted.

Indonesia has the world’s largest geothermal resource reserves, currently second only to the United States in terms of installed capacity. At the G20 summit, the Indonesian government reiterated its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and increasing the proportion of new energy to 34% by 2030. In this context, there is a need to accelerate the development of geothermal energy. The 2022-2030 National Electricity Procurement Plan plans to add 3355 megawatts of installed capacity to geothermal energy by 2030.

Most traditional geothermal power plants in Indonesia are single flash steam turbine type (commonly known as “central power plants”). Due to the fact that “central power plants” only use steam from gas-liquid two-phase heat sources to drive steam turbines for power generation, there are few examples of power generation applications for geothermal resources with low to medium enthalpy values (below 190 ℃) (reserves of nearly 8000 megawatts), resulting in a number of unused geothermal wells (commonly known as “abandoned wells”); On the other hand, the tail water produced by flash evaporation of high-temperature steam is discarded and not reused underground, greatly reducing the efficiency of geothermal resource utilization. The ORC expansion power generation units developed by Kaishan can not only generate electricity by utilizing the tail water left by flash steam, but also significantly improve the comprehensive energy utilization efficiency of high enthalpy geothermal fields; Low to medium enthalpy geothermal resources can also be used to generate electricity with high efficiency, turning waste into treasure; And it can also make the construction of small-scale geothermal power plants a reality, applied on remote small islands in Indonesia, known as the “Thousand Island Country”, providing urgently needed energy to small islands lacking electricity supply.

It is reported that only the idle geothermal wells and tail water of geothermal power stations in the country’s geothermal fields can produce an additional 2000 megawatts of geothermal power without the need for new geothermal wells, which will greatly shorten development time and save development investment.

The success of this Lahendong experimental project is of great significance to PGE. Previously, its CEO, Ms. Nick Widyawati, visited Lahengdong Geothermal Project and stated that the company plans to build a 210 MW organic Rankine cycle hot water power generation project.
